Helpful Resources in the Fight Against Pornography

Practical Guards Against Pornography

  • Utilize accountability software on devices. There is a growing market of companies that provide accountability and monitoring software for parents and accountability partners. This software is installed on computers, tablets, and phones and gives trusted partners more information and insight into what is being browsed and helps filter content based on different categories. Some are free and some have monthly fees. CovenantEyes, Accountable2You, X3watch, NetNanny, Canopy, Bark, are a few options out of many very good options. OpenDNS also networks with your home WiFi or per device to provide another covering of accountability or filtering.

  • Utilize filtering technologies in the wireless router in your home. Most home wireless networks have options for filtering adult content. Any devices that connect to your home WiFi would hit this filter and would be a good first line of defense against pornography and adult content. The newer the devices, the better the parental technology. These wireless routers have the ability to limit the times that WiFi would shut off (i.e. between 10pm-6am each day or on week nights). Explore what options are available when purchasing a new wireless router or look up your wireless router online to see what features are available.

  • Check your cell phone provider for parental controls on each device. Some wireless providers have filtration and restrictions that can be placed onto phones to prevent accidental viewing of adult content. Companies are becoming more and more proactive to offer options for parents to be more in control of their devices.

  • Use wisdom and common sense in protecting yourself and young eyes. Think through common-sense ideas such as keeping a computer in a central location in your home, charging phones and devices overnight in a parent’s room rather than kids’ rooms, and setting limits on devices for content and time.
