“We are to bear one another's burdens, and fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6: 2)
Last week it was my privilege to share God's living truth with the fine people of the Hartford Baptist Church down in the Wire Grass region of South Alabama. God showed up and showed off during those spiritually energizing days of revival!
I stayed in the tranquil home of a man named Leonard Chandler. Leonard and I instantly connected because we share the ultimate common-denominator of Jesus Christ. He graciously opened his home to me and more importantly he opened his life. Leonard told me about his journey of 87 years. Only four months ago he lost Mary, his beloved wife of 64 years so my visit seemed well-timed. One night after the revival, we were eating some boiled peanuts and Leonard told me a fascinating story from his past. When Leonard was only 9 years-old, his father tragically died from a ruptured appendix. Leonard was the second oldest of the five children and they all idolized their Father. Leonard described his Dad as a big, strong south Alabama Farmer. He reminisced, “Jay, I can remember my Daddy picking up fertilizer bags that would weigh 200 pounds apiece and carrying them two at a time to the barn. I thought he was Hercules!”
Tragedy struck hard in 1936. Leonard's Dad had planted 160 acres of cotton and it was time for the harvest when his Father stepped suddenly from this earth into heaven. Leonard’s precious Mother was overwhelmed with grief and the responsibility of five children ranging in age from 11 to 2. They had no idea how to harvest this huge crop that represented their financial lifeboat. They prayed and waited. Leonard's uncle came to the rescue! He arrived like the heroic Calvary in a movie. His Uncle brought a wagon load of friends and began the tedious process of handpicking that huge cotton crop. Leonard and his family observed God's love in action. He further explained that within a few months his Christ-like Uncle decided to move his wife and five children to Leonard's farm where they lived together with the ten children and took care of each other!
Leonard’s story brings to life God’s great truth: “We are to bear one another's burdens, and fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2) Life in this fallen world's is tough and unpredictable. We have no guarantees. We do not know what will happen next. So wise people will deeply connect to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who will guide and provide. Additionally, it is imperative that we connect to the Body of Christ because God’s Children will serve as a tangible demonstration of their Heavenly Father’s provision.
Learn it and live it: WE NEED JESUS AND WE NEED EACH OTHER!
