Parenting Observations

Parenting children requires the wisdom of Solomon and the perseverance of Paul! As a parent of four children, I have attempted to recall and codify some of the principles that have been most effective. The greatest asset for my effective parenting was marrying Mary Ruth! Mary Ruth grew up in a true Christian family, she served as a school teacher, and she has a deep faith in Christ combined with abundant common sense. Her experiences and education contributed enormously to helping her effectively mentor our children.

Our three primary goals in parenting included: providing a loving, stable home, educating our children in life skills, and creating consistent consequences for choices.

1. Children need a stable home environment. God’s simple design consists of a dad and mom who love each other and walk daily with Christ. An authentic Christian home provides stability, love, security, instruction, discipline and joy. Mom is the nurturer and dad should be the provider, protector and pastor of the family.

2. Children need training in life skills. Deuteronomy 6 describes the home as a “living laboratory” for mentoring the next generation. Parents convey the basic life skills of language, hygiene, safety, work ethic, recreation, values, faith, and worldview. Children constantly learn positive and negative lessons from their parents. A parent’s attitudes, actions and omissions will shape a child into a healthy, stable and productive person or contribute to their delinquency. Mary Ruth and I intentionally sought to teach our children to follow Jesus Christ and be stewards of His blessing. In a world of takers, we have tried to teach them to be givers and servants. We tried to teach them self-confidence without arrogance. In a fallen world of pollution and pain, we endeavored to explain that Christ-honoring purity protects you. Essentially, our parenting theme is ALWAYS FOLLOW JESUS!

3. Children need consistent consequences for their choices. Galatians 6 describes God’s “law of the harvest.” If you choose to disobey God’s rules, you will suffer the consequences and experience punishment. In the Wolfden, we used the Biblical instruction of disciplining by spanking (Proverbs 22:15). We sensitively and reasonably applied the board of education to the seat of knowledge! We were convinced that a child must learn to submit to parental authority by the age of 5 or it would be an uphill battle. If a child does not learn to submit to parental authority, they will defy the authority of teachers, coaches, policemen, employers, and eventually God Himself.

Parenting is a sacred stewardship.  You want to mentor your children to become true Christ-followers who are healthy, stable and productive people. Furthermore, God’s Word says, “Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) When you embed God’s truth in a person’s mental thoughtware, it becomes a compass which can be activated at any time to show them God’s way back home.
