Vicious Storms rampaged through the South this week leaving a path of destruction and taking 35 lives. On Monday night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, John Servati heeded the tornado warnings and went to a basement to seek a safe shelter. John grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was on the University of Alabama Swim Team. John followed Jesus Christ and actively shared his faith through the ministries of Campus Crusade. The tornado did not hit Tuscaloosa but the torrential rains caused the wall of the basement shelter to collapse on John and he died on Monday night in the place that was supposed to protect him.
Our earthly life comes with few guarantees. Our fallen world is a beautiful but dangerous place.
With a simple, stark statement, Jesus sums the great truth that our life on planet earth is a fragile journey that will culminate at the door of death. “Work for the night is coming, when no man can work.”(John 9:4) The Savior coaches us to LIVE READY. God’s Word clearly tells us, “It is appointed once for a man to die, then comes the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27) You have an appointment with death. Wise people heed warnings and prepare for the inevitable. Christ-followers purpose to make their earthly voyage count by serving Christ and creating a crop of eternal fruit.
Life lulls us into the illusion that we have unlimited time to do God’s work. The devil’s favorite word is TOMORROW. In contrast, Jesus summons His disciples to work for His holy cause TODAY. The inspiring missionary, Amy Carmichael, powerfully pictured the urgency of God’s work when she observed, “We have all eternity to celebrate our spiritual victories but we only have a few moments before sunset to win them.”
Moses delivers God’s call to LIVE READY when he instructed, “As for the days of our lives, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, but soon it is gone and we fly away. Teach us to number our days that we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:10-12) God coaches us to LIVE READY by learning to count and learning what counts!
