Leading Our Children to Follow Jesus

Last Sunday, I baptized Graham Martin and Jamorian Bell. These young men were very excited about the opportunity to publicly express their faith in Christ. They were following the instructions of Jesus: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:16-17)

The salvation transaction is extremely simple: We give everything that we know about ourselves to everything we know about Jesus. As people grow older, they learn more about themselves and more about the Lord. Consequently, discipleship is designed to be a dynamic process of continual growth. We constantly grow our love relationship with the Lord, but it begins with child-like faith. God calls you to exercise child-like faith by acknowledging your sin problem and totally trusting His gracious forgiveness to embrace you and place you into His forever family.

Some people criticize child evangelism with the indictment that children do not know enough. However, such assertions contradict the instructions of Jesus and erroneously assume that the critic has it all figured out!  Nothing is more natural than a child choosing to follow their Creator and Redeemer. Actually, the older you get, the harder it gets to follow Jesus. The salvation invitation is not limited by a person’s age, intelligence, literacy, cultural or social status. Jesus invited everyone to climb down from their high horse of arrogance and assume the posture of child-like humility in order to become His faithful and obedient follower.

Let us work together to see our precious children come to Christ. You should never coerce a child to follow the Lord. Instead, naturally cultivate a child’s faith by sharing the stories of Jesus and praying with them. When children worship with their families and observe other people being baptized, translate that experience into an opportunity to explain why you believe in Jesus and help your child develop their own love relationship with the Lord.

One day, two pastors were comparing notes about their churches. The Baptist Brother shared that he had baptized two and a half people on Sunday. His friend assumed that two adults and a child were baptized. But his friend explained, “No, actually, I baptized an older man and two children. Since the old fellow has used up most of his life, I only counted him as a half!” When a child embraces Jesus early and grows into a dynamic disciple, they can spend their entire journey serving God’s purpose and making a mighty eternal impact!
