JB Tidwell + Jesus = Enough

Do you ever feel small and inadequate? The stress, pressure and frustrations of life grind us down. We need God’s Word to lift us up. Learn and live God’s energizing truth: “I can do all things THROUGH CHRIST who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

In 1973, I entered Baylor University. Many of my classes were located in the Tidwell Bible Building. The impressive edifice was named for Dr. JB Tidwell, who was the chairman of the Bible Department from 1910-1946. Tidwell had a fascinating story that still inspires me.

JB Tidwell was born in Alabama in 1870. He grew up in the impoverished home of a tenant farmer. At age 13, he was illiterate. A Christ-proclaiming revival came to his community. JB heard the Gospel and was gloriously saved. He desperately desired to read God’s living, transforming Word. Consequently, he embarked on an educational quest. As a teenager, he started first grade in a rural school.  His bright mind enabled him to quickly learn to read and catch up with the other students. In only four years, he completed all of his grades and enrolled in Howard College, which is now Samford University. Tidwell possessed an insatiable thirst for God’s truth and for learning. After completing Samford, he found a pathway to attend Baylor University and acquire a Masters degree in Bible. He made his way to the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. in Biblical languages and theology. From 1910 to 1946, he taught at Baylor and influenced thousands of young people as he proclaimed the riches of God’s truth. JB Tidwell’s contribution to a generation of Christian leaders was acknowledged when Baylor named the magnificent Bible building and chapel the JB Tidwell Tower in his honor.

Tidwell marveled at how an illiterate, impoverished farmer’s son from rural Alabama could make such a large impact for the Kingdom of God. He wrote the story of his life journey and entitled it, “JB Tidwell + Jesus = Enough.” His simple point was that Jesus is sufficient. Like the Apostle Paul, JB knew that when you walk in daily surrender to Jesus, His provision, power and victory are released in you.  When I learned Tidwell’s story, I decided to adopt his theme song and reminded myself that Jay Wolf + Jesus = Enough. The same is true for YOU!
