Floating, Fighting & Navigating!

God’s Word tells us to: “Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise making the most of your time.” (Ephesians 5:15-16) Our journey through life can be compared to a boat traveling a treacherous river. Some stretches of the stream are smooth and quiet, while others parts are turbulent and filled with rapids. It appears that most people react in three ways to their river ride:

1. Some are FLOATERS who passively resign themselves to accept the river’s condition and aimlessly float down stream.
2. Other people are FIGHTERS who battle the forces of nature at every point, but generally experience burn-out, stress, depression, frustration or addiction.
3. Another group are NAVIGATORS, who realize they cannot control the river so they equip themselves to wisely navigate the currents and skillfully respond to the obstacles. They know how to go with the flow.

Which river rider best characterizes you?

Are you a passive person whose theme song is “Que Sera, Sera -- Whatever will be, will be.” Many people function like a dead fish who float aimlessly downstream offering little resistance and making little difference. Others tend to approach their ride in an adversarial fashion. They are always in a battle, which makes their company unpleasant and their contribution is generally bloodstained.

The best river rider is a Navigator, who uses Holy Spirit-guided common sense to “walk wisely and make the most of your time and opportunity.”  The Navigator realizes that he will encounter some features of life that he cannot control like the death of a loved one or a health crisis.  Suddenly the river he rides grows cold, dark and turbulent which demands skillful and patient reactions. The wise Navigator equips himself by mastering God’s Word and surrendering control of his little boat to Captain Jesus. The gracious and purpose-driven Navigator picks up other passengers and even does some fishing along the way! The successful Navigator becomes adept at enjoying the beautiful scenery and yet stays focused on the currents to avoid collisions and capsizing.

As you navigate 2014, ask the Lord to go with you and enhance your navigating skills so that you can know and go with HIS flow!
