Don't Wait to CELEBRATE!

After our precious daughter-in-love, Katherine Arnold Wolf, suffered a catastrophic brain bleed and miraculously survived, she offered some profound observations following her stroke.  One of her most provocative instructions was the proclamation: “DON’T WAIT TO CELEBRATE!” Katherine encouraged us to use the good dishes and the fine linens instead of keeping them in a closet.  She called us to rejoice in each day because life is fleeting and fragile and God wants His Children to live in the moment and enjoy His presence and blessings.

God’s Children are called to frame life in celebration. For instance, after the Lord delivered the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage, they perennially celebrated God’s activity through the commemoration of Passover. (Exodus 12:14)  Moses built an altar of celebration at the foot of Mt. Sinai to express joy for God’s provision of a covenant with Israel. (Exodus24:4) Joshua built a monument from 12 stones to celebrate the wilderness wanderers coming to the Promised Land and miraculously crossing the Jordan River. (Joshua 4:20-24) After Nehemiah completed rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem, he gathered the people for a time of worship and celebration. (Nehemiah 7:1) David declared, “This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) Jesus joyously exclaimed, “I have come that you might have life and life in its ABUNDANCE!” (John 10:10) Paul proclaimed, “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say REJOICE.” (Philippians 4:4)

Wynona Judd wrote a memoir about her path to becoming a celebrity. She failed to celebrate her celebrity.  She said it was a wild and glamorous ride but looking back she observed, “I still carry some sadness about not having enjoyed the rise to fame more.  I seemed to be so busy trying to get to the next gig and simply reacting to the details that I did not comprehend the term ‘living in the moment.’”

Celebration is important because it places every event and action in our lives in the larger framework of God’s presence and purpose.  So learn to celebrate the monumental events and the mundane moments. Daily celebration provides a platform to express appreciation for God’s blessings and anticipation for His future favor.  Wise Christ-followers consistently acknowledge the Lord’s gifts and don’t wait to celebrate!
