Jesus instructed, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) I have discovered that the Christmas season provides a superlative time to fish for people. After all, the prevailing signal of the season is Christ. Every time you utilize the greeting of “Merry CHRISTmas!” the Savior’s name is shared. Let me urge you to intentionally go fishing for people during December by sharing the attractive bait of your witness. Put these three hooks to work:
- Invite people to Christ-centered events. Invite an un-churched friend or family member to attend magnetic events like our Living Christmas Tree. People are unusually open to the Gospel and they will come if invited. I have discovered that people are more ready to hear the Gospel than we are to share the Gospel. So, share the Gospel by inviting your seeking friend to a Christmas worship experience.
- Use your Christmas card as a witnessing tool. Move beyond the neutral message of a Happy Holiday into the territory of sharing your testimony through your greeting cards and gifts. Boldly and unashamedly use your cards and gifting to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Remember that “faith comes from hearing, hearing the word of God.” (Romans 10:17) When you share God’s Word in your Christmas communications, the Gospel becomes a seed to lodge in the heart of everyone who receives it.
- Use the hook of kindness. The greatest bait of all is love. Jesus explained, “They will know that you are My followers if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35) Love attracts people to you and connects people to Christ. Bake some cookies, rake some leaves, or make a lonely person feel special by sharing your time and table. Intentional acts of love and kindness make you an effective evangelist on par with Billy Graham!
This Christmas, go fishing for people in the teaming streams that surround you. With love and intentionality, share the Gospel of Jesus Christ that transfers our friends out of death and darkness into God’s family of light and life!
